This was made known very recently when Don Jazzy posted a video of an artiste known as Marv on Instagram asking people to “support his artiste who just signed an artiste”. This same video was posted by Reekado Banks who started with a photo before getting to the video part. On the photo post, he said;
Now this is strange in the Nigerian music industry where not only do artistes find it difficult to leave their labels before the end of their agreement, they cannot even be so forward as to have a record label while they’re still under one, at least we know how difficult that can be but it is important we note that the label, TOT Empire which has been announced to be Reekado Banks and his brother’s, has been around for a while but all we knew was that the label belongs to be brother, Temi. Apparently, there has been some development.
So here are the things that came to mind when this news came up;
Don Jazzy is such a nice boss! Like how do you promote the “artiste if your artiste”? that’s so much conflict of interest, but guess what? we think Don Jazzy is cool like that after all, what’s better than one management? More management. So yes, the first thing that came to mind is that Don Jazzy is really cool promoting a song of his artiste’s artiste, which seem to be true… sort of.
The next thing that came to mind is that this is definitely a publicity stunt to promote this song and the artiste. Marv as an artiste did not start singing today hence this is not his first single. Was he signed under the same management when he did his other songs? Definitely yes! So how come we didn’t hear about the song? At least it didn’t generate the same buzz. Well, that is why it is easy to want to believe this Reekado Banks affiliation was strategic, to ensure we hear the song and know the artiste.
How is that going to happen?
So the minute you heard Reekado Banks has a new artiste what did you say? Let me guess, “Has he left Mavin?” and then you realize he hasn’t and you’re even more confused because you want to understand how an artiste being managed can be managing another artiste himself. All those curiosities will definitely land you on the new artiste’s page or go over his name series of times and stumble on his song, Abeg, which is pretty dope!
If this theory is true should we get angry at Don Jazzy and Reekado for misleading us? Nope! It seems like a good strategy to ensure people listen to a good song and acknowledge the existence f Marv in the Nigerian music industry. Did they achieve that? We wouldn’t know just yet until he starts trending and hopefully he does.
Congrats to Reekado on his new label, TOT Empire and Marv on his new trip to great things with these stars.
