It is 2019 and Nigerian Music is making visible invasion on the international scene and increasingly gaining coverage from the global media. At the forefront of this breakthrough are two prominent talents, WizKid and David, gaining vocal praise for their much-publicized progress.
Afrobeats slowly began to edge its way into prominence as the major genre by which Nigerian sound will come to be referenced and portrayed.
DJ Ben G “Two Kings in A City” provides us a compilation of songs from the two big exporters of the Afrobeats sound, WizKid, and Davido.
The former whose career has been a product of talent, grace, and commitment, hails from Ojuelegba, Surulere, in Lagos where it all started. Today, the Ojuelegba boy has grown into an iconic figure that is hoisting the African banner at the very center of global music. The cover art of the mixtape draws inspiration from Wizkid‘s background where we often find the Yellow buses, the mainland area of Lagos.
And the latter, Davido, who has known wealth from birth grew up in an environment of luxury and comfort. The Lekki-Ikoyi bridge in the cover art is used to depict the Island area of Lagos, which perfectly expresses David’s narrative. Since the Island area is usually seen as the upscale part of Lagos occupied by the movers & shakers of the society.
Two Kings in A City Mixtape avails you the opportunity to revisit an evolution of diverse sonic sounds from the Two Kings that has now come to be described as Afrobeats.
