I was away recently to the Holy Land for some meetings in addition to spending some time visiting some of the holy sites, after a day of rather busy schedule, I found myself slumping into some lonely state of depression, I quickly called someone in Lagos that would usually crack jokes with me and perhaps lift me out of that mood.
Sadly, the person was in a similar emotional moody state and I immediately felt vulnerable in the hands of the enemy, I paced back and forth in my hotel room, alone and lonely, wondering what I should do and how to cheer myself up. I began to talk to the Holy Spirit immediately, asking Him for answers to my many questions….by the way, nothing happened that day that triggered the mood, just a hangover of previous day’s disappointment that came back to my mind.
Then the Holy Spirit (my Most Reliable Friend and Partner), reminded me of some scriptures about Friendships and I got comforted with those scriptures just like Paul mentioned
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfortof the scriptures might have hope – – Rom.15v4
This is one of the reasons God gave us scriptures, to COMFORT ourselves when we are depressed and unhappy. I concluded that True Friendship is a gift from above that we all should pray for because of the role a Friend is meant to play in our lives and what we should also do to those we consider Friends. The irony of the matter is that someone you serve the gift Of Friendship may not serve you as a True Friend but we all need this lovely gift to survive certain moments during the course of our journey through life.
3 BENEFITS OF TRUE FRIENDSHIP
- LOVES AT ALL TIMES: The Scriptures tells us that a True Friend will love at all times. It is amazing because the scriptures just affirmed that there will be times in our lives where loving might be difficult and tough but a True Friend will be there with you during those times. A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity (Prov. 17 v 17) Good times, bad times, tough times, great times, sad times, happy times, depressing times, cheerful times, lonely times, party times…a True Friend will be there to love you.
- STICKS CLOSER THAN FAMILY: This is the passage that distinguishes friendships from family because it says clearly that a True Friend sticks closer than a brother or family member. A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother – (Prov. 18 v 24). I know how close family members are to us but if we give friends a chance, you could get a good gift of a True Friend that will stay closer to you than a brother.
- LIFTER UP WHEN WE ARE DOWN: Someone may love at all times but not able to ‘lift’ his Friend up from some terrible situations financially, career wise and other wise. Another benefit of a True Friend is that he or she will ‘lift’ up the Friend when most needed. I needed lifting and only a friend could have done that for me considering my status in life and ministry, many people would not expect me to be in such a situation but I was like our Lord Jesus in the garden of gethsemane. Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up – (Eccl 4 v 9-10)
I pray that the Lord will bless you with a gift of a True Friend today for your journey in life. We all need friends and also should become Friends for others as well. We may just attract our True Friend when we become Friends to someone else (Prov. 18 v 24).
