One of the keys to true happiness and abundant joy for believers is finding Rest in their Sleep. Many people do not know how to Enjoy Sleeping but just roll around the bed tired, and depressed, and cannot wait to get up early to rush into the rat race of trying to make it and pay bills.

The scripture gives us a peep into the mind of God about sleep; those who enjoy their sleep have found out that there is a connection between a good life and good sleep. The Psalmist says it’s in fact God’s gift to sleep well, ‘It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows, For so He Gives (a gift from God), His beloved sleep’ (Psalm 127 v 2). 

We sometimes make the mistake of confusing Rest with Sleep. We are supposed to find Rest during our Sleep, remember God rested from His work but God doesn’t Sleep. The scriptures affirm this point in Psalm 121 v 4, Behold, He that keeps Israel neither sleeps nor slumber and Ex 31 v 17, ‘…on the seventh day, He rested and was refreshed’.

An article by Harvard Health Publishing claims there is a close link between sleep and mental health and World Health Organization recommends we get around 8 hours of sleep a night. Sleep deprivation can affect your mood according to a book, ‘How to Overcome Anxiety’ written by Anne Barnes. Let me share a few secrets with you on how to Enjoy Your Sleep.


  1. SLEEP LIGHT: make sure you do not go to bed heavy but light emotionally. My wife has the habit of telling me not to share any bad news with her before going to bed, so I restrain myself and do not share things that can affect her mood before we both slip into our duvet for a good night’s sleep.


  1. SLEEP WITH HUMOUR: I always try to go to bed with humour and laughter. I watch some light comedy skits to ensure my heart is merry as I go to bed to enjoy my sleep, I have found it very therapeutic and has worked wonders for me.


  1. PRAY BEFORE YOU SLEEP: I ensure prayer is the last thing I do every night before going to bed, I commit my sleep to God’s hands and ask Him to visit me with dreams and revelations of the night, I commit myself and family to His hands as babies and pray for spiritual protection with angels on assignment.


  1. REST IN YOUR SLEEP: Do not carry work to your sleep journey, leave work here on earth when you embark on this journey for the next 8 hours. The purpose of sleep is to Rest from work and things that sap your strength, you enjoy your Sleep when you rest your mind and allow your brain and body to recuperate in sleep.


  1. SLEEP IN THE DARK: this point is scientific, so I will not make too much ado about it. Science has proven that when lights are out in a room, Sleep is easier to enjoy, unlike the opposite. I turn off the lights to aid my sleep always.

There are other things people do to Enjoy Their Sleep like sleeping with light music, eating vegetables well before sleeping, avoiding eating heavy meals before bedtime, etc. I choose the above points for Inspire Today and hope you can find comfort in the above points.
