The lead singer of OneRepublic has collaborated on songs with Adele, Taylor Swift, and U2. Last January, private equity giant KKR bought the vast majority of his remaining publishing copyrights; he took home just shy of $200 million after his $60 million catalog sale in 2017.
Red Hot Chili Peppers ($145 Million)
Despite selling their publishing catalog to Hipgnosis in May, the influential alt-rock band hasn’t given it up just yet. Their upcoming album is expected later this year, according to reports. Insiders claim that the band made $140 million from a slew of songs they’d written throughout their now five-decade career. This brand is a part of the list of highest-paid musicians in 2021.
Lindsey Buckingham ($100 million)
Stevie Nicks sold her rights to Primary Wave in late 2020 for $100 million, and Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsey Buckingham signed a similar deal with Hipgnosis just weeks later. Among the 160 songs he gave up was the primary songwriter credit for the eminently licensable “Go Your Own Way” in the publishing catalog.
Motley Crue ($95 Million)
Mötley Crüe’s master-recordings sale to BMG was widely reported at $150 million when the news broke, but insiders say the band’s take was closer to $90 million.
Heavy metal’s mainstays held on to their masters for this long, making it a significant haul.
Blake Shelton ($83 Million)
A previously unreported catalog sale of Shelton’s made him the only country artist on this list to earn more than $50 million.
Even in the face of a complex pandemic landscape, he was able to boost his earnings thanks to his eight-figure salary from The Voice, his new album Body Language, and a tour that brought in $14.5 million.
